Mercedes GLE (W167): 2018 New Generation SUV

With the W167, the specialists from Stuttgart built a new SUV on the MRA platform of the current E-Class. This architecture has once again been optimized for crossovers, including the upcoming GLS. Thanks to the GLE chassis, the weight has again been reduced by a few kilograms, which should be below the two-ton mark, and, of course, the new Mercedes GLE will be available in the base version only with rear-wheel drive. As for the dimensions, the SUV has grown a little in width and wheelbase.

In addition, compared to its predecessor, the new Mercedes GLE has many more off-road capabilities. These include increased ground clearance as well as front and rear underbody cladding, improved lateral axles, air suspension, a locking differential and a nine-speed overdrive transmission.

Two versions of the AMG Mercedes GLE

The top versions of the Mercedes GLE are the AMG 63, as well as the AMG 63 S. The outdated 5.5-liter V8 is replaced by the concern's universal weapon, the four-liter V8 biturbo engine. This unit produces in the AMG-E class from 571 to 612 hp. Diesel hybrid will join later. Power transmission will take place using an automatic transmission, which is aggregated with all units.

Visually, the new generation of Mercedes GLE does not look like a revolution, but rather an evolution. The aprons and door sills have been redesigned, the radiator grille has been modified. The protruding bulges on both sides have also been redesigned and the profile line is now above the door handles. A typical C-pillar is tilted against the direction of travel. As with the current series, the Mercedes GLE will also hit the market later as the GLE coupe (C292).

Looking into the cabin of the new GLE, at first glance you can see a very large display that rises above the center of the dashboard. As in the S-Class, the left half serves to display all driving information, while the right half is reserved for the infotainment and navigation system. Below the display are four new rectangular air vents. The driver controls the new steering wheel with touchpad. Rear passengers in the GLE will have much more space.
